(Phoenix, Ariz.) The December calendar at The Nash is filled with an array of jazz concerts, from nostalgic themed shows to afternoons of holiday cheer. Highlights for the month at the popular jazz club include GRAMMY nominated pianist Geoffrey Keezer on December 9, a holiday themed "Swinging' Solstice" withThe Nash Vocal Ensemble on December 22, and "Hot Dogs and Jazz" for families on December 15.
 
The Nash is located at 110 E. Roosevelt, in downtown Phoenix, on Roosevelt Row.

From the mid-1970s through the early 90s, Francine reigned as the most popular jazz and blues vocalist in the Valley. In fact, she was still winning New Times/Best of Phoenix awards after she moved to Atlanta! Francine appeared with her bands Jazz Alive and Fever at venues such as The Boojum Tree, Chuy’s and Chuy’s Next Door/The Night Club, Churchill’s Pub and Bombay Bicycle Club, plus numerous festivals and concert halls. She has been part of Lyle Lovett’s Large Band since the mid 80’s, appeared on The Tonight Show, and appeared for many seasons in Seattle’s high-energy dinner-theatre cabaret, Teatro ZinZanni. What an amazingly diverse and exciting career!

Drummer and Composer Joel Oroz is excited to present a concert featuring the music of prolific, master composer & saxophonist Wayne Shorter. The group will focus on his work in the 60’s including compositions for Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, the Miles Davis Second Quintet and more. Featuring a stellar band, this is one you don’t wanna miss!
Joel Oroz is an adventurous Jazz Drummer and Composer born and raised in Phoenix, AZ. He began playing drums at age 5, and has been performing professionally since age 16. Throughout his development he has been inspired by drum masters such as Vernell Fournier, Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones , and Elvin Jones amongst many others. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at Arizona State University under the direction of Mike Kocour, Dom Moio, and Lewis Nash. Joel is a proud member of Geocentric, Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra, and various other projects around the Phoenix area.

With his highly regarded discography, unique compositions, and acclaimed performances in a variety of configurations, multiple GRAMMY®-nominated pianist Geoffrey Keezer commands the attention typically reserved for the living legends of jazz. Keezer was playing in jazz clubs as a teenager, holding down the piano chair for Art Blakey at age 18, and touring in the company of Ray Brown, Joshua Redman, Art Famer, Benny Golson and Barbara Hendricks in his 20s. More recently he has toured with Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Sting, Joe Locke and Christian McBride; produced and arranged three GRAMMY®-nominated recordings with vocalist Denise Donatelli, and released a series of albums drawing influences from Hawaiian, Okinawan and Afro-Peruvian folk traditions.

The South Mountain Latin Jazz Band, under the direction of Eddie Gaona, focuses on playing the exiting rhythms of Latin fused with Jazz. The two most influential mixers are Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music. This combined with Jazz comes across as passionate, intense, powerful and exiting!
Eddie Gaona has been a music educator for over 35 years, a professional trumpet player, an arranger and the leader of a Latin band. Eddie is currently music director and theory instructor at South Mountain Community College.

The Gospel Choir at The Nash is a community-based performing ensemble new to The Nash for 2018. Under the direction of Dr. Jason Thompson, and accompanied by Dr. Ashley Oakley, this is the culminating performance of their eight weeks of rehearsals.
 
The popularity of gospel music makes the genre appealing to study and perform. The members enjoy singing in a gospel choir, and gaining the cultural knowledge, the social connections, the spiritual affirmation, the recreational enjoyment, and even the musical opportunities.

As a vocalist and trumpet player, Christine Fawson has always loved performing classic standards from the American Songbook. Her new album SINGS JAZZ (Fall 2018) features some of her favorite jazz standards, with arrangements by pianist Tim Ray. The album features Christine on voice, trumpet and flugelhorn, Tim Ray on piano, David Zinno on bass and Casey Schereuell on drums, with a guest appearance by jazz vocalist David Scott.
 
Tim Ray’s wide-ranging skills as a soloist and accompanist have afforded him the opportunity to perform with legendary performers from all walks of music. Appearing on over 80 recordings to date, Tim has performed in concert with an extensive list of pop music icons, notably Aretha Franklin, Lyle Lovett, Jane Siberry and Soul Asylum.

A 14-year veteran of Tuesday nights at “Smoke” in NYC, pianist, organist, educator, and bandleader Mike LeDonne has been one of the most in demand session musicians for well over 30 years. Backing icons like Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, and Benny Golson, Mike has been the bridge between the straight ahead and soul music of his generation. His latest Groover Quartet release “I Love Music” on the Savant label represents that great soul jazz connect of Charles Earland and Jimmy McGriff in that Mike plays soul music of his era but backing it with a stellar band featuring Joe Farnsworth on drums, Eric Alexander on tenor saxophone, and Peter Bernstein on guitar.

About Lewis Nash
Internationally acclaimed jazz drummer Lewis Nash, named the most valuable player in jazz byModern Drummer Magazine, was described by Ira Gitler of The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazzas "Perhaps the most talented drummer of his generation." Lewis grew up in south Phoenix and by the early age of 10 years old began playing drums. At age 21 he moved to New York City, where he became the drummer of choice for an incredible array of artists - from jazz masters to the hottest young players of today. His 30-year career includes performance on 10 Grammy award-winning albums and an impressive discography of over 400 recordings with jazz legends such as Betty Carter, Tommy Flanagan, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Hank Jones, Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter and Clark Terry, as well as such contemporary jazz artists as Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, Joe Lovano and Roy Hargrove. 
 
A highly respected educator and clinician, Lewis joined the faculty of the ASU School of Music in January 2017 as the Bob and Gretchen Ravenscroft Professor of Practice in Jazz.
