The Crystal Cave
Hawkinsdance will be premiering a work that imagines a perfect and hidden place, undisturbed and uncorrupted, subject to the laws of nature but not the effects of humanity. Original score by Anton Faynberg.
Mac Allen
I don't want to keep opening and closing doors. I'm tired of losing things.
In my new work "I don't want to keep opening and closing doors. I'm tired of losing things.", I am unpacking my childhood experiences in relation to coming out as queer. Some themes that are arriving in this process are opening and closing, surrendering, arriving at the pain and softening, tension and the space in between created by violence and fear, and vulnerability. This connects to a larger conversation with the LGBTQA+ community with the process of coming out and how it affects our mental health and progressing towards a normalcy in our society as opposed to "other".
Jordan Daniels
(Breaking Ground Commissioned Artist)
"Eleanor” is a framework in which to approach the topic of human uniqueness and exceptionalism. Choreographer Jordan Daniels investigates First lady Eleanor Roosevelt's life as a vehicle to explore the human desire of to rise above one's natural born circumstance. A cast of 5 exceptional women and multiple projection sites provide a current perspective on this complex, iconic historical figure.
Noble Dance Motion
You are being watched! As we move dangerously closer to AI, Drone looks at technology intervening in our privacy and manipulating our behavior. The main character is a flying drone and its human manifestation played by Seth McPhail. Dancers perform complex partnering with their eyes closed as the drone hovers vigilantly. Movement inspiration was drawn from watching our kids interact with an iPad and content was inspired by recently publicized data privacy breaches.
Noble Dance Motion
Haunting and visceral, Fragment plays with memory distortion by interweaving video with live dance. Created in collaboration with lighting/technology artist David Deveau, Fragment enters the mind of a broken woman and depicts her deepest fears. About integrating the technology, Deveau shares, “What was exciting about developing Fragment was we combined our skills of making dance for the stage with dance for the camera and created a hybrid work.”
Nadar Rosano
The Freedom To Choose
Nadar Rosano arrives from Tel Aviv, Israel to perform in Breaking Ground 2019. His piece, "The Freedom To Choose," explores the human search for emotional connections and experience. Two characters exist within walls, looking for a loving glance, a warm hug, a connection which always seems to be missing. Through this, they unveil the true nature of love and the deep solitude found in the shell of every day life.
Trebien Pollard
Shaking the Devil: the black swan effect
Shaking the Devil: the black swan effect is a solo work, conceived and performed by Trebien Pollard. This work presents itself as a meditation on living – a conversation with the dead - a prayer for the hopeless and a lament for the lost. The work seeks to explore the process of healing and how the limits of the body can transgress the treads of trauma and enclosures? By examining the inner fragments of existence, the work addresses the vulnerability of identity shaped by layered memories, thoughts and losses.
Parting Light - Suzanne Beahrs
"Parting Light" is a dance film with a lone dancer in the isolated wildness of the California desert. This work explores exposing oneself to the the beautiful and harsh desert landscape, gaining strength from one's environment while being open to this vulnerable situation.
Michael Crotty
The Dead Tree
"The Dead Tree' is a dance theater work that is a reimagining of "Lord of the Flies". In this work, the cast of five dancers bumps up against classic tropes from children's literature that has them confronting shared realities from their own childhoods.
Created over a period of three months, each dancer developed characters whose expressions, monologues, embodiment and interactions are a response to their own experiences with childhood. The result is a dance theater work that is playful, aggressive, and at times...savage.
Kalin Green
“Ken” is structured around what it means to lead a plastic life and questions where the discussion value belongs in our lives. Is there a time where items or events become of equal value to an individual or their place in the matter? If so, when and what is the price? The movement is intended to mimic a mannequin or doll and will be paired with an ambient mix of expensive and free scores. Opera like sounds contrasted by the sounds of a youth choir. The price tag is based on your relation to the two worlds.
and so it goes
What does the end look like? End of a story, end of a chapter, end of a conversation. The choreographer is confronting the reality that life is made up of a series of endings before the final end. Exploring her own difficulty with change and the finalities of life, the soundscore consists of iconic breakup songs from the early 1960’s and provides a container to investigate the human response to endings in all their forms.
Eckman - Kessie - Wooder
Mother of All Time
An experimental dance project that explores the relationship between time, space, dance, and music. This was the first of its kind to combine choreographed dance, hyperlapse presentation, and dramatic camera movement. The piece shows how a person's interpretation of time can affect their perception of movement.
Eric Handman
Upcoming Premiere for 2019 Breaking Ground
This dance is a new work commissioned by Carley Conder for her company CONDER/dance. This is the first time in five years that Conder has allowed an outside choreographer to create on the CONDER/dance dancers. She chose Eric Handman for his exquisite skill in working with the partnered form in contemporary dance and his uniquely fluid yet wild movement style. CONDER/dance looks forward to working with and premiering a new work by this nationally recognized artist.
Immediately following the performance, the audience is invited to
the after-party reception.
Light hors d'oeuvres will be served, with cash bar.
Tiny Dances will be performed in the Lakeshore Room
at the After-Party following the Main Stage Performance.
Tiny Dances are short, 5 minute pieces performed on a "tiny" 4 ft x 4 ft stage.

April Anne Music: The Journey Was Worth It April Anne Music: The Journey Was Worth It

April Anne Music: The Journey Was Worth It

April Anne is originally from Boston, ma but  has called Arizona home since 1990.  After her parents divorced  during that year she found herself in a very hot state with no friends.  She found a friend in music and poetry.  From this she was able to spread her wings and become the woman she is today.

Music has always been  her lifeblood and at times would drive her parents crazy, for she would never stop singing, she was a living radio.

In 1991  in addition to writing poetry and singing she picked up the violin.  coming from  a musically gifted father, she found that playing music came naturally to her.  She ended up playing this beautiful instrument for 14 years, in addition to 2 years of viola and 1 year on Cello.  But from her many years of playing she injured herself and ended up developing tendonitis in her left elbow and right shoulder.  This all came to the surface during her first year in college, as a  vocal major, when she was finally learning the piano, she had to drop out after  one semester and not play any instruments for 6 months.

Once she  was healed she began to teach herself piano.  She'd always wanted to learn it and instantly fell in love.  But it didn't always come easy to her.  The concept of singing while playing proved to be a tad tricky at times, but with anything that is challenging to her, she practiced until she persevered.

April has been writing music and poetry since she could put a pen to paper.  Her lyrics always come from a place that she knows, her life.  She has lived major ups and downs and all are reflected in her music. when she is in love she writes songs that could melt any man's heart, but when she's been hurt she writes lyrics that touch many deeply.  She admits she has made many mistakes, but if given the opportunity wouldn't change a thing from her past, for they all made her who she is today.

"piano strings" is a great example of this.  A song about a horrible relationship, April jokes, "well at least i got a good song out of the whole thing".  She is shocked at how this song has really taken off.  With it's provocative lyrics and energetic piano she leaves nothing out.  It's all right there for us all.

No matter where life leads her, we can always rest on knowing she'll be singing about it in one way.

when asked, what if you never get your heart broken again, she replies with, "no worries there, i have enough ammo to last a lifetime!"

April is currently hard at work on her album and singing at local venues and open mics whenever she can.

Stay tuned, for this is just the beginning!

I am currently working on my first full length studio album.  this album has been in the works for years so I am very excited to finish it!  I am hoping to have it done by may, but I am not sure if that's possible yet.  it will contain an array of songs written from 3 years ago to even as recent as last month.  I write from real experience and from my a deep place inside.  this album is very close and personal to me.  it's literally my life in song form, the good the bad, and the in-between.
Finished tracks so far are: Piano Strings, Phoenix, Perfect As Me, and Winding Road, you can find these on my soundcloud page:

Tha Sire Released A Music Video Titled "The Other Side"

New hit song by Tha Sire "The Lights" has been flowing through social media and gaining more and more fans by the hour. Take a listen for you will understand why Tha Sire is getting so popular. This is what L had to say." With eyes on the prize, Tha SIRE has proudly watched Tha E souljahs rise. The ground floor group and label has come up and now proudly lifts the veil to his upcoming new projects. This will be his first since his debut album, Tha ARRIVAL Built from the bottom up, the record label established by Ernie Jimenez is a fitting example of what hard work and an a visionary dream can create. A bootstrap operation built by the son of Mexican immigrants, Tha E is too independent, positive, hard-core so-it-yourself hip-hop and rap what Jimenez AKA Tha SIRE is to a new movement that seeks to bridge communities while providing alternative role models for young people caught up in the endless cycle of gang violence and racial animosity." "I grew up in East LA and the Inland Empire," says Jimenez, songwriter, producer and emerging record label mogul. "In the end, my parents moved me to Arizona because they wanted more for me and my siblings, something better for me." Jimenez, who performs as Tha SIRE as a way to express only the most dignified and truly noble aspects of fatherhood, is convinced that our young people need role models who are honorable and just and believe in the sanctity of life. Coming of age on the streets of East LA and the back alleys of San Bernardino, Jimenez was no stranger to gang life and admits that the lure of the streets was strong. As a rebellious adolescent, he knew jail from the inside as a result of his affiliations. He was, however, savvy enough to take heed when concerned educators found their way into the halls to offer knowledge and advice. "Even if I was acting like I was hard and didn't care, I listened," says Jimenez. Meanwhile on the home front, his parents were busy trying to cope with a son who appeared to be on the wrong track and head straight for the end of a dead end street. With a fresh start in the desert, Jimenez managed to beat the odds, finish high and earn a degree. And most importantly, after getting his paper straight and his life on track, he launched himself as an artist with a clear conscience and a vision and a mission to build an empire. Influenced by the oldies as wells as the early hip-hop styles of Easy E, N.W.A., LL Cool J, and Run DMC, Jimenez often found himself among, break dance crews while watching members of his family practice beat boxing. "I always loved music. My dad always loved music, nothing professional, but he would pull out the guitar, and play while me and my brother watched" Jimenez says, explaining where it all began and riffing on his need to create a legacy of hip-hop based on truth instead of the usual bling-bling bluster. "I don't say I have a Cadillac Escalade just to rhyme. I tell the truth about what I know and at the same time, I want it relate to everybody, no matter what city they live in, whether it's a love song or a song about the streets," he adds, defining himself as a realist, a characteristic uncommon in the industry. "Every city has the same concrete, the same asphalt." With 18 songs collected on his first major release, Tha Arrival, Tha SIRE solidifies his emergence as a father of a new dynasty. Among the stand-out tracks are the true life tales embodied in: "ThugRollin," "Gave My Life Away," "Where we're From," "Soldier oftha Street," "Life and Death," "Why Every time,""Street lessons and "It just goes on." Executive produced by ThaSIRE, Tha ARRIVAL features vocal stylings by Kokane, Kurupt, KMG (Above the Law) and Goldie Loc and is available in stores now. The debut will now be followed this fall by new releases from the growing roster of artists signed to Tha E. First to come out will be the ENOUGH SAID mixtape by Tha SIRE followed by his second album Tha OCCUPATION. Dates are not yet set but Tha SIRE is currently in the studio working hard on his new projects. "No cuss words" says Jimenez as he describes and sums up his new music. "I'm excited" is also what he replies when speaking of the song he will be releasing as his return "THEY SAY I SAY" . "The song and video will speak for itself".
